In 1899, Torii Shoten was founded by Shinjiro Tori and began producing wine and western-style liquors according to the day’s tastes. And in 1907, Suntory’s flagship drink was created – Akadama Port Wine (in 1973 renamed Akadama Sweet Wine), which is still produced today. In 1929, the first Japanese whiskey, Suntory Whiskey Shirofuda, was created. Later the assortment was expanded with beer and other drinks. In 1973, a second distillery was opened in Hakushu, the very center of Japan. Today it is the largest in the world and is equipped with 24 stills. Today, Suntory is one of Japan’s most prominent beverage, food and health supplement manufacturers. Suntory has an active social and environmental stance.
