The origins of the creation of cognacs produced under the brand name “Tavria” are Swiss colonists, who in 1889 laid the foundation of the village of Osnova in the Kherson region. Today at this place Tavria Vintage Cognac House is located. Emperor Alexander I called to the Russian Empire the hereditary winemakers Louis Gehler, Julius Mayer and Jean Jatone to entrust them with the development of winemaking on the Nizhnedneprovsky Sands. From this point the history of the enterprise began, history, which became an example of how desire and will to win can destroy any obstacles, history about how the production can be established in unfamiliar conditions, history about success and fame. The unique soil and favorable climate created good conditions for growing grapes of different varieties, from which excellent wines and cognacs were produced. It is noteworthy that the Tavria vineyards are located at the same geographical latitude with Charente province (France), which is considered the birthplace of cognac. The Ukrainian city of New Kakhovka is located at 46 parallel similar to the French city of Cognac. That fact was the reason the foundations of Ukrainian cognac production was laid here.
