The Japanese company Suntory was founded in 1899. The company’s founder was Shinjiro Tori, in honor of whom the company got its name. Suntory was created to import Spanish wines into the country, but in 1923 begins to show interest in whiskey, and near the city of Yamazaki, builds the first distillery in Japan. The area where the distillery has a cold and humid climate is ideal for aging whiskey in barrels. However, Suntory whiskey received accurate recognition only in the 50s, after the Second World War. In whiskey production, soft, clean water is used from three rivers, at the intersection of which the distillery stands. The earliest varieties were made according to Scottish technologies and were similar to scotch. However, due to climatic conditions, the aging of alcohols in oak barrels proceeded differently, and therefore Japanese whiskey initially had a special, unique character.
Today whiskey «Yamazaki» is not only No.1 among single malt whiskeys in Japan but is also popular in more than thirty-five countries around the world.
